Last Sunday, Kasey Sanchez concluded our Summer Stories series by preaching on the parable of the Unmerciful Servant. As Kasey preached, God is full of mercy for us, and unforgiveness is toxic to us. Jesus teaches us that forgiveness is the way forward!

This September, Journey will be offering the opportunity to participate in “The Marriage Course,” a 7-week series designed to strengthen the marriage relationship.

Whether you’ve been married for five months or five decades, there is something to be became from this course.

The course will be over Zoom and can be done in the comfort of your own home. An in-person get together is being planned on week 5 to help the course participants get to know one another. Share your ideas for a get-together, get child-care info, and sign up here on our Google form!🧡

For life is more than food, and the body more than clothes. Consider the ravens: they do not sow or reap, they have no storerooms or barn; yet God feeds them. And how much more valuable you are than birds!" (Luke 12:22-24)

Last Saturday Mitchell Brannen was ordained as an elder in the Free Methodist Church (which Journey is a part of)! 👏🏻 Mitchell has served in the past on the staff here at Journey, and continues to serve in the church. It was a joy to celebrate this next step for Mitchell!

- Journey youth had a blast at the summer kick off event, and the s’mores night last week.
- We celebrated 3 baby dedications with some precious families in the church!
- We wrapped up our Embodied series that took us through the second half of Acts, and are starting a new series this Sunday!

Last Sunday, Pastor Olivia preached on Embodied Suffering out of Acts 24-26. At this point in the story of Acts, Paul has just spent 2 years being (wrongfully) imprisoned, is on trial, and now gets to testify in front of King Agrippa of Rome (the man who has the power to declare his legal innocence or guilt). Instead of talking about the darkness of his suffering or the injustice of his imprisonment– Paul shares his testimony of how Jesus transformed his life.

The reality is that Paul went through many dark days of suffering (even outside of this snapshot we see in Acts 24-26). But the darkness did not have the final say, it was not the testimony of his suffering— it was the light. It was Christ. The hard story was held within the good story of knowing and following Jesus.

What might we learn about embodying suffering like Jesus through Paul’s testimony? We invite you to take some time to go back and read Acts 24-26 again this week with that question in mind. And feel free to continue on through the end of the book of Acts (Acts 27-28), because this coming Sunday we will be finishing up our Embodied series in Acts. We’d love for you to join us!

1. We had our annual Volunteer Appreciation Dinner out at Snyder Park on Memorial Day! It was a blast! What a gift y’all are to our church!! 🎉🙌🏻

2. On May 25th, we celebrated and prayed over our graduating high school seniors. It was a beautiful moment, as we took some time to surround them and pray over them as they make the transition into the next chapter of their lives! 🎓🙏🏼

There are so many people who volunteered their time (many of whom worked behind the scenes and aren’t pictured in this post) to contribute in some way! From set up, to caring for our kids, to handing out donuts, to prepping the flowers for our flowering cross, to being in the band or on the sound team, to tear down, and anything else in between— we truly couldn’t have made it all happen without y’all! 🌸

Today is Good Friday. It is the day we remember Jesus’ death in the cross. “Good Friday” feels like an odd name for a day like this… but Jesus’ resurrection, which we will celebrate on Sunday, makes today “good”. Jesus— who suffered and willingly gave up his life, bearing the weight of all the sin of the world, out of love— is so very good.

We would love to have you join us tonight for our Good Friday service, which will be at 6:30pm at the Sherwood Center for the Arts. We will take about an hour to remember and reflect on Jesus’ death; through scripture, songs, and prayer.

Last week we wrapped up our series in Ruth. It’s been such a rich time spent in the book of Ruth. As Pastor Scott preached out of Ruth’s final chapter, he drew our attention back to Naomi. He preached out of Ruth chapter 3, uncovering the story to show all of the faithfulness and redemption going on beneath the surface of the text. Last week, Pastor Olivia preached on Ruth 2 and helped us see how God filled in the gaps in Naomi and Ruth’s story. Even beyond that— she helped us see how our God is one, throughout the stories of the Bible and throughout our own lives, who meets our needs and consistently fills in the gaps. Pastor Olivia also invited us to consider how God might use us to fill in the gaps of brokenness that we see in the world around us. His plan of redemption is for us, and it includes us!

Last Sunday, Pastor Jamie Noling Auth preached on our third week of the Scripture Practice: Study. We highly recommend going back and listening to it again, or for the first time (if you missed it)! She started off by giving us this metaphor of the Grand Canyon for engaging with Scripture. On her own trip to the Grand Canyon, she shared the quote pictured above.

If Scripture is like the Grand Canyon, Jamie suggested that reading and meditating on Scripture are like seeing the beautiful view from the top and that studying scripture is like the hike into the canyon. “What’s going to happen as we go down into the canyon [as we study Scripture] is that we are going to see those same colors that we saw at the top of the canyon, but brighter, more vibrant– it is going to come into focus for us in a way that we couldn’t from just gazing at it from the top. This is our invitation into study.”

We are excited to welcome Libby to the Journey Staff as the Pastor of Groups and Formation! Libby graduated in May of 2024 from Azusa Pacific Seminary with her Master’s in Pastoral Studies. Libby and her husband Corey recently moved to the area from Southern California, and are excited to be a part of the Journey Church family! Fun facts about Libby: she’s a native Oregonian, finds God in nature, loves a good craft, and most importantly, she’s passionate about coming alongside people as they walk with Jesus. Welcome Libby!
